 CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES

The CFA Jacint Carrió i Vilaseca is a public center for adult education with its area of influence in the city of Manresa and in the region. Its training offer includes a wide variety of courses to cover a wide spectrum of needs: basic instrumental training (literacy), graduate courses in secondary education, preparation to access different degrees of vocational training and university, language courses for immigrants, English and computing courses.

In recent years, the demand for places by people of immigrant origin has increased significantly in all courses and educational levels. Teachers have a great experience in adult education; however, they have to face new challenges. The most important one is that the vehicular and study languages used so far in teaching different subjects (L1) have become foreign languages (L2) for a significant number of our students, who do not have sufficient linguistic proficiency to successfully follow their studies. The prospect is that this situation may increase due to the migratory flows in the coming years.

The CFA Jacint Carrió i Vilaseca wants to face this challenge and for this purpose and the staff has designed a project to participate in the Erasmus + KA104 program with the following objectives:

1.Improve the processes of reception and initial evaluation of students of immigrant origin to detect their previous knowledge and be able to guide them, through a personalized training itinerary, searching for the most suitable course according to their levels and interests.

 2. Improve the linguistic competence in the vehicular and study language of these students with communication difficulties in a language that is foreign to them (L2).

3. Observe good practices in organizations dedicated to the teaching of adults in Europe and, at the same time, provide ourselves with new resources, methodologies and approaches to overcome language barriers.

4. Establish new contacts with European educational staff, share good practices and resources. And, in parallel, to become a host organization in case that other participants in European programs want to come to our center to carry out an apprenticeship.

5.Update and improve the linguistic competence of our teaching staff, especially in English and French, so that communication can flow easily and does not entail any limitations within the framework of the Erasmus + program.

PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS

The participants are primary and secondary school teachers with experience in adult education, who are aware of students' academic difficulties, and want to provide themselves with new methodologies to overcome the learning difficulties found in class.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

A total of five mobilities are planned, distributed in two types of activities:

1.Activities by observation

Four teachers will visit two associations in Belgium to see first hand good practices in organizations with similar characteristics to ours. These are Proforal asbl and Molenbeek Formation asbl, both located in the Brussels capital region and dedicated to literacy, basic training and teaching French as a second or foreign language (L2) to immigrants. Observing the processes of reception, initial evaluation, academic orientation and teaching approaches will be our priority.

2.Structured training course

A teacher will participate in a structured training course entitled “Innovative practices in the langue class” at the Centre Universitaire d'Études Pédagogiques of the University of Perpignan (France), in order to provide innovative methods in teaching foreign languages (L2 ).

RESULTS AND IMPACT

The expected outcomes of the project are an improvement in the academic results of students of immigrant origin, especially those corresponding to linguistic subjects, but also some non-linguistic ones, an increase in the percentage of students who pass courses, and who obtain the qualification of apt, or get an official diploma.

The achievements will be shared with other similar organizations in the Manresa area, which also teach language and literacy to immigrants. It is also our will to disseminate good practices so that they can have a wider impact and, finally, become a host organization at European level for  educational staff interested in an apprenticeship in the CFA Jacint Carrió i Vilaseca.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS

The main benefit is to overcome the learning difficulties of certain groups and change school failure into educational success, letting students access better job opportunities and achieve social integration.
